December 1944, near Stavelot, Belgium. Front lines of mixed American infantry, including scattered remnants of the 106th Division, devastated near St. Vith in the first stage of the German offensive. This remnant includes Corporal Casey Malley, who by all rights should have been among the dead and wounded at St. Vith? |

When the next barrage of German artillery walked up to and through their position, the squad members hugged the bottom of their foxholes. Corporal Malley just dusted off his boots and kept talking. "So we got into St. Vith, and the Germans were coming through it like a storm. I was in charge of a machine gun in an old mill at the edge of town. Got about three bursts off when I got this," said Malley, pointing to an ugly crease across his forehead. "So when I come to, this Sarge is hunched over my gun, blazing away at the Krauts coming through the orchard. Every time he runs out a belt he cusses a blue streak while feedin' in a new one. Every Kraut from here to The Rhine could hear him. Finally this German sticks up a parley flag and the Sarge stops firing. The Kraut yells, 'Comezie out, Amerikans!' And the Sarge yells back, 'Comezie in, you Nazi #%$#!' Hah! He starts up firing and my lights go out again. Next thing I know he's dragging my frozen butt through the snow about a mile from town..." |
