Gregory, the Wanderer, seen in many lands along the war-ravaged boundaries of the crumbling Roman Empire. A bringer of healing to Roman and barbarian alike? |

Over the length and breadth of the Catalaunian Plains, or so it seemed, the dead and those who strode to its dark threshhold lay -- Hun and Roman, Ostrogoth and Visigoth. Attila, defeated but still strong, paced like a wild predator in his camp, awaiting the renewed attack of the victorious Romans under Aetius and his allies the Visigoths. It was on this day that Thorismund, son of slain king Theodorid of the Visigoths, in meeting with Roman general Aetius upon the battlefield, beheld a man with gray cloth and long staff in among the dead, searching for life in friend and foe alike. "Who walks among the dying?" Thorismund asked of Aetius. "That is Gregory of Samothrace," said Aetius. "A man of great healing powers, it is said -- whether by herbs or by the Hosts of Heaven I do not know. A monast, who cares little for the cut of a man's beard. See, there, how he succors the Hun who has fallen? Such a man is beyond your world and mine, Thorismund, and I do not interfere with him..." |
